CodeSuite 5.0 Released

A new version of CodeSuite has just been released. In addition to a few minor bug fixes, there are a few new features that you should find very helpful.

CodeSplit is the new tool within CodeSuite that splits a program's source code into basic code elements (identifiers, statements, and comments and strings) and puts them into a CodeSuite database for further analysis. You can then use SourceDetective to search the Internet for these elements to help determine whether the code originated from open source code. You can generate an HTML report that shows the elements for every source code file. Learn more about it here.

Sorting a database can now be done automatically with a single command. All file pairs are sorted by their scores, from highest to lowest. This also means that the HTML reports generated from these sorted databases will be sorted, making it easier to start examining file pairs starting with those that have the highest overall scores.

Oracle v. Google: Protecting Software Development, Not Destroying It

Many articles are coming out about how the recent decision in Oracle America v. Google is going to destroy the ability to create and protect software in the United States. The latest doomsday prophet is Jie Lian in his IPWatchdog article entitled Oracle v. America: Fair or Unfair. As a longtime programmer and an expert in software copyright law, I can tell you that the Federal Circuit got it right, and the decision helps software developers and encourages software development because it leaves in place the copyright protections that have existed at least since the Software Copyright Act of 1980. I am sure that most of us can agree that software development has skyrocketed since 1980.
